A one-week-old lurcher-type puppy whose eyes were still closed has been found in a cardboard box in an alley-way.

The report was made to the RSPCA by a member of the public, who says the puppy was found alone, with a blanket in the box outside their back gate on Queen Street in Ruabon on Tuesday evening.

The RSPCA rescued the tiny brown puppy, who they say was somewhat lethargic – and is now being cared for by a foster carer. The pup has been nicknamed Maiya.

An appeal for information has been launched by the charity, hoping to decipher how a one-week-old puppy came to be abandoned in a cardboard box like this.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “We’re eager to find out more information about this sad incident. It is staggering anyone thought it acceptable to treat such a helpless creature in this way.

“This tiny puppy is barely one week old, and her eyes remained closed when we collected her. The caller tells us the pup was found in a cardboard box, in a blanket at a back gate on Queen Street in Ruabon.

“She was lethargic after the ordeal, but is fortunately now being looked after by one of our foster carers.

Anyone with information related to this abandonment is urged to call the RSPCA on 0300 123 8018.
