Wrexham AFC has announced that Wales Rugby League will face Ireland in the European Championship at the historic Racecourse Stadium in November as they bid to qualify for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

In this year’s tournament, the top two nations will gain automatic qualification for the next World Cup, which will be hosted in England.

Before Wales’ clash with Ireland, John Kear’s men will travel to France and Galashiels to take on Scotland in the European Championship. The venue and date for the trip to France is still to be confirmed.

Wales Rugby League chief executive Chris Thair commented: “We’re delighted to be hosting our game against Ireland at the Racecourse Stadium. The ground has a long association with rugby league.

“As the top two teams in the European Championship will qualify for the World Cup, we want a big crowd in Wrexham to hopefully cheer on the lads to success.

“We’ll be working closely with both Wrexham Football Club and Wrexham Council to promote the match over the next couple of months.

“I know that John, his backroom staff and the players are all eager to put on a good show in the European Championship.”

Gavin Jones, Wrexham AFC director said: “We are delighted to welcome Wales Rugby League to My Racecourse for their game against Ireland.

“This is another high level event that shows that our stadium is North Wales’ most valuable multi-use facility, with football, rugby and live music events being hosted here.”
