St Giles Parish Church in the town centre has suffered at the hands of metal thieves – and / or vandals – who have removed a section of copper that acts as a lightning conductor.

Copper prices are currently around £3.80 per kilo ‘wholesale’ paid for scrap metal. There is a proposal to ban scrap metal merchants paying their clients in cash, the aim being to make the whole process more accountable.

It is possible to see where the copper was removed.

Police tell us they have been notified of the theft.
