Coleg Cambria in Wrexham has been named as the site of one of the Welsh Government’s new Welsh Language Centres.

The college, in partnership with Wrexham and Flintshire County Councils, submitted a successful bid to develop a Welsh Language Skills in the Workplace Centre in Wrexham town centre.

The centre will provide a focal point for Welsh language vocational training as well as Welsh language support and advice for individuals, businesses and community groups.

David Jones, Principal and Chief Executive of Coleg Cambria said: “We are delighted that our bid to develop a Welsh language Centre has been successful and look forward to working in partnership with Wrexham and Flintshire County Councils and other organisations on this very exciting project.”

“The Centre will concentrate on increasing the opportunities for people living in Wrexham, Flintshire and surrounding areas to use the Welsh language naturally in all aspects of their everyday life by focussing on increasing the value of the Welsh language as a skill for the workplace.

“It will also benefit local employers in the public and private sectors as well as third sector organisations who are keen to improve their bilingual customer service”.

The Capital Investment Fund is aimed at enabling local authorities, colleges and universities to work with community partners to develop dynamic centres to enable people to learn or practice their Welsh.

Aside from Coleg Cambria getting £300,000 the following projects will also receive support during the 2014-15 financial round:

  • Ynys Mon Council (£138,723) to develop the county’s Welsh Language latecomers’ immersion centres
  • Trinity-St David’s University (£300,000) to purchase a building in Carmarthen town centre to be converted into a multi-purpose Welsh Language Centre
  • Carmarthenshire Council (£70,000) to work with third sector partners to develop a multi-purpose Welsh language centre in Llanelli
