I understand from reliable Council sources that if the Arts Centre does become a reality it would be managed by a not-for-profit trust, which would take over ownership of the building.
The designs in the sketches were produced by a London firm of architects who won the contract to do a feasibility study.
It seems unclear at present how much of the car park space would be needed by the new project. I am personally very concerned about this aspect of the project, as the People’s Market car park is a very important one for this part of town, although under-used at the moment since the changes to the charging regime.
The sketches etc are only a concept, all of the fine detail is subject to change/revision even should the project go ahead… The big screen on the roof is supposed to be a temporary open-air cinema, the idea would be that it would be used for that purpose in the summer, and would revert to car park use in the busier pre-Christmas period. But only a concept, as I say!

    That sounds really fascinating Lisa.
Where exactly on Charles Street was the bakery? We are dying to nip round and look for ourselves, it’s only round the corner from the shop of course!

Had a great meeting this morning with the 3rd-year degree students who will be designing our trail leaflet, they were full of enthusiasm and good ideas. It’s going to be brilliant!

Yes, apparently this large basement/cellar was used as an air raid shelter in World War Two. Anyway we hope that Phil Phillips, who does the Wrexham heritage guided walks, will be getting in to see us soon, he should have some interesting details to share with us. Becky talked to someone at the church today who had a theory that the churchwardens used to use the tunnels to secretly get to the town centre pubs to see who was in them when they should have been in church!:)

we’ve heard that there were air raid shelters under the market so Halifax and smiths would make good sense Zinger.

Darryl, did you see the tunnel?

Wow, what a response. Guess we’re not the only ones interested in them. We’ve heard a lot of tales about them and where they are supposed to go but there seems to be so very few people who have actually seen them personally. Have any of you?

Getting on really well now with the first draft of the Trail. Had a good chat with the people at the church this morning, and hoping to talk to someone from the Civic Society shortly.

Martin and I did a bit of the Boardman Tour with our smartphone on Sunday afternoon, it really is an excellent informative and fascinating piece of work :)

The Council and the Destination Wrexham group are being tremendously supportive and helpful with our project, and we hope that Glyndwr Uni’s Art & Design department are also going to be involved.

One person I am having real trouble tracking down is Phil Phillips (mentioned by Alan in a previous reply on this thread) – we have two phone numbers for him, neither seems to work any more! If anyone reading this knows him or has contacted him recently, could you call or e-mail our shop and let us have the details? Just click thru to our website from our Wrexham.com ad for our contact details.

    Many thanks in advance, Ruth

Thank you for the encouragement, Alun! Yes, I’ve got a whole list of people to consult/pick the brains of, and Phil Phillips is one of them, just haven’t had chance to speak to him yet…

The street names idea is an intriguing one – there are all sorts of different angles to approach it from – I think this first attempt will probably be relatively basic and simple, but hopefully then it will be just the start of further progress, with maybe even some interpretation boards out on the streets in time, who knows?

I certainly didn’t mean to imply in my earlier post that Wrexham isn’t already a fun place to visit! But Martin and I always enjoy our visits to a strange town or city much more when we can find out interesting things about its history, so we feel that some at least of Wrexham’s visitors would enjoy this as an extra activity.

The Council certainly has done a lot of hard work already – there are some brilliant resources out there on the internet already, such as this fabulous site “Boardman’s Architectural Tour of Wrexham” we found recently:
WCBC: Boardman’s Architectural Tour of Wrexham

But it’s not always easy for casual research to find them, plus of course not everyone has a smartphone! So a nice coloured leaflet (specifically about the town centre), available from lots of places, would fill a gap, I think…

Primarily visitors and newcomers to the town – we want them to have a better, more fun experience while they’re in the town centre. But I’d like to think that locals will enjoy it too; when we’ve had displays in the shop, or material in our shop newsletter, about the town’s history, it always seems to be very popular.
