County Trials Inspire Tee Off of 2011 Golf Season
Talented amateur golfers from Wrexham and Denbighshire gathered at Wrexham Golf Club on the last Sunday of March for a testing day of golf which comprised of a foursomes game followed by an individual medal.
Players were greeted with cold, benign conditions and a course only really emerging from a harsh winter period which saw the coldest December on record. A mixture of youth and experience was on show and it was experience that came to the fore in the afternoon, with Steve Merrill of Wrexham Golf Club posting the best score of 70 gross. County Captain Terry Dodd remarked of how impressed he was with the excellence on display throughout the afternoon, which was reflected in a number of fine scores.
Many could be forgiven for thinking golfers closing the field of county players would be the last out on the course, but with the clocks moving forward an hour the previous night, members took the opportunity to fit in some twilight holes signalling that summer is just around the corner.
In only a week from now, golf enthusiasts around the UK will turn their attention to the iconic Augusta National and the US Masters. Though it is hard to quantify why, watching golf at Augusta always inspires many of us to dust off our clubs and head to the local golf course, probably in some delusional hope we will display a standard of golf befitting of a major champion. Arguably the lure of the game is in fact that we can’t master it; nobody is perfect, and nobody is a perfect golfer, but we wouldn’t be human if we didn’t try or somehow hope we could be.
My advice, surrender to the temptation, get out and have a game. You might enjoy it, you might not, but it surely beats staying at home wondering.
