Over £465,000 is to be invested in infrastructure improvements across Wrexham – including improved signage and the creation of more 20mph zones.

The funding has been announced as part of a Welsh Government investment, totalling £467,560.

It will be used on a number of additional transport projects, including £170,000 to improve walking and cycling facilities and £45,000 will be spent on road safety improvements on A534 from the town centre towards Holt.

A further £40,500 will be spent on improved signage and surface on B5101 Prices Lane, Wrexham to Brymbo Heritage Way with £45,000 being invested into road safety improvements between A539 Ruabon and the A525 Hanmer junction. £87,860 will be put into education and training via the Pass Plus Cymru scheme, Kerbcraft, cycle training, training for older drivers, and awareness schemes.

A total of £79,200 will also be used to implement 20 mph zones around seven schools across the County Borough, including:

– Acrefair CP school
– Bwlchgwyn CP School
– The Maelor School, Penley
– Madras CP, Penley
– St Paul’s Aided, Isycoed
– St Peter’s Rossett
– Ysgol Pontfadog.

The projects aim to improve safety, create economic growth and promote active travel.

Welcoming the investment, Wrexham’s Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths, said: “Investing in the nation’s infrastructure is one of the Welsh Government’s key priorities. Millions of pounds have already been spent in and around Wrexham and I am pleased local residents will benefit from this latest round of funding.”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, added: “This is excellent news which will see more safety measures implemented across the county borough including implementing 20 mph outside every school in the county borough by the end of 2017. I would like to thank Council officers who successfully bid for this funding from the Welsh Government.”
