Six candidates fighting to become first ever Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr MP
Six candidates are set to fight it out to become the first ever Member of Parliament for the newly formed Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr.
The constituency covers large parts of mid Wales and includes thousands of registered voters and households in Wrexham.
The General Election on Thursday July 4 will be the first fought under new constituency boundaries and with a reduced number of Welsh Members of Parliament.
The number of parliamentary constituencies in Wales will drop from 40 to 32, with each containing between 69,724 and 77,062 electors.
Six candidates have been nominated for the election, with their details and parties below:
- Jeremy David Brignell-Thorp: Green Party
- Oliver Lewis: Reform UK
- Glyn Preston: Welsh Liberal Democrats
- Elwyn Vaughan: Plaid Cymru
- Craig Williams: Welsh Conservatives
- Steve Witherden: Welsh Labour
It replaces the former Clwyd South ward – which has seen villages and towns effectively divvied up into either a larger Wrexham ward or the Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr.
Unlike the previous Clwyd South ward – where results were announced in Wrexham – the count for the new Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr constituency will take place in Powys.
Wrexham voters in the following areas will be casting their vote for an MP for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr:
- Cefn
- Chirk North
- Chirk South
- Esclusham
- Johnstown
- Pant
- Penycae
- Penycae and Ruabon South
- Plas Madoc
- Ponciau
- Glyn Ceiriog
The boundary change will mean that residents in the above areas will share their MP with areas as far as Machynlleth, Newtown South, Montgomery and Llandrino.
Polls will open for the General Election at 7am on July 4 and will close at 10pm.
Make sure that you are registered to vote by June 18! It only takes a few minutes to do so make sure you’re registered and tell your family and friends to register as well.
