Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has today set a date for a 4th July election.

It comes after months of increasing speculation about when Mr Sunak – who has insisted the next General Election will take place in the second half of the year – will confirm a date.

The election will be the first time that voters will head to the polls to vote in a General Election since December 2019.

The looming election will be the first to take place with new constituencies.

Locally that will see a larger Wrexham constituency and the removal of Clwyd South.

Instead some villages that were previously part of Clwyd South, such as Ruabon and Rhostyllen, will become part of the newly formed Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr

Wrexham has seen several prospective candidates or parties indicate names that will be on the ballot paper, including:

  • Current MP Sarah Atherton for the Conservatives
  • Labour’s Andrew Ranger
  • Plaid Cymru’s Becca Martin
  • Tim Morgan for the Green Party
  • Charles Dodman for Reform
  • Tim Sly for the Liberal Democrats .

More names and parties could be put forward, or be changed, before Wrexham goes to the polls in 43 days time.
