Hospital staff in Wrexham recently pulled out all the stops to ensure one of their patients celebrated their 100th birthday in style.

Ellen Robinson, from Wrexham. was presented with a birthday cake and large selection of cards and presents sent to the Wrexham Maelor Hospital from friends and family.

Staff from Mason Ward, where Ellen is recovering following surgery, also decorated the ward to help make her day extra special.

Dementia Support Worker, Kate Beetlestone, who helped organise the celebrations, said: “Being in hospital over a birthday isn’t nice for anyone, but when it is such a special birthday we feel it is only right we celebrate.

“All Ellen’s cards have been delivered to the hospital so were able to put them on display in her room that we have decorated with birthday banners.

“We also had a lovely buffet delivered from our catering team, which included a cake and specially made fruit bowls and sandwiches that all of our patients enjoyed.

“Due to the current visiting restrictions it wasn’t possible for Ellen’s family to come in and see her so we arranged to do some Skype calls with her loved ones so they could wish her happy birthday.

“It has been a wonderful day, Ellen is such a lovely lady so we are very pleased we could do this for her and help her celebrate her 100th birthday.”

Ellen’s daughter, Wendy Sutton, said it was wonderful the ward had made Ellen’s birthday one to remember, adding that the staff had gone ‘above and beyond’ to help her mother celebrate such a special milestone.

She said: “I’m really grateful to the staff for all the care they have provided my mum, it’s wonderful they have gone the extra mile to make this a special day for her.

“It was lovely that they were able to set up Skype calls for us so we could wish her a happy birthday as well.”
