Wrexham has missed out on city status it has been announced this morning.

However, St Asaph in North Wales was one of the successful applicants as well as Chelmsford and Perth, which were all awarded city status as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Wrexham Council went ahead with the city status bid despite members of the public voting almost two to one against it in a consultation.

The bid is estimated to have cost in the region of £20,000.

Wrexham Council Leader Ron Davies said: “We are naturally disappointed by the announcement. Wrexham submitted an excellent bid and everyone can be proud that it was able to compete on the national stage alongside the deserving winners and we send our congratulations to them.”

Wrexham MP Ian Lucas also spoke of his disappointment at the news, he said: “I am naturally disappointed. I would like to congratulate St Asaph on their winning bid. All of us in Wrexham must now strive to ensure our town is seen as a positive place to live and work.”
