Geraint Perry was officially diagnosed with Autism when he was just 7 years old, though his family had noticed in early development stages that Geraint interacted with the world in a different way than his brother & sister.

For Geraint himself the differences didn’t become noticeable until he moved up into junior years of school and noticed the way his classmates picked up new skills or knowledge a lot easier than he was able to.

Speaking with Wrexham.com Geraint explains how throughout his school and college years he saw himself as “the person who is sitting observing everyone” but isn’t necessarily involved.

However he explained that unlike the common stigma of Autistic people not communicating well or lacking in social ability, his autism actually heightened his empathy and led him to taking an active interest in people’s wellbeing.

From childhood Geraint found one of the ways he could express himself fully was through storytelling and fondly recalls being mesmerised when his dad got out the family camera to film presents being opened on Christmas Day

“When he got the camera out I understood that it meant this was a special moment and as I’ve grown up I’ve become fascinated at being able to see me and my siblings as children, it’s really nostalgic now”

His interest in stories & visuals eventually saw Geraint setting up his own Youtube channel, studying film at college whilst trying to turn creativity into his full time work with a film and photography company.

Geraint explained how he’s found it difficult to balance the need for financial stability, which he has acquired through taking 9-5 jobs to pay for his film equipment and his desire to work for himself when it’s such an up and down industry.

“I worked at a wedding recently and had to purchase a brand new camera, SD cards, batteries and extra kit for an entire day’s shoot. It’s a lot of money to spend in the short term, but it’s an investment you have to make for the long term but self employment can be so unstable when it comes to how many jobs you get at once”

In his bid to establish himself as a creator, Geraint has worked on a number of projects from weddings, music videos and more. When we asked about his favourite or most notable projects to date he explained it’s the short films he’s worked on with fellow friends and filmmakers.

“You do something you love, that you’re passionate about but on top of that you get to work with your mates, it doesn’t even feel like a job”

As he looks to the future Geraint simply asks that the general public can help get his work out there by liking and sharing his social media presence on Geraint Perry Cinematic Video & Photo, he’s especially keen to work on more weddings.
