A national celebration of our NHS and frontline staff is being marked by volunteers in Wrexham.

Next Monday (5 July) is the first NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day and members of the Maelor Voluntary Service (MVS) are offering all NHS workers at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital a free drink and snack as a small token of their appreciation.

The date is significant as the NHS was created on 5 July 1948. People have treasured our publicly funded health service ever since, but never more so since March 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic took hold and transformed all our lives.

Organisers hope NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day can become an annual nationwide celebration, granting people the chance to show their gratitude to NHS staff and all key workers.

To mark this special event in Wrexham, the Maelor Voluntary Service is offering each member of the NHS a free coffee or tea, plus a scone or packet of biscuits to show how much they value their hard work and dedication during this extremely challenging period.

Wrexham’s Member of the Senedd has joined forces with the Maelor Voluntary Service to encourage NHS workers in Wrexham to make sure they visit the café on 5 July to claim their free drink and snack.

Lesley Griffiths MS said: “This day provides us with the ideal opportunity to show our gratitude to all the NHS and frontline staff who have worked tirelessly during this extraordinary period. The entire nation is grateful for everything they have done, many risking their own lives to help save others.”

“I’m delighted this inaugural event is being recognised locally and I am sure the Maelor Voluntary Services’ gesture will be welcomed by staff. I would also like to thank the MVS. The volunteers are an integral part of the Maelor and the support they have offered over the years to patients and visitors is invaluable.”

For more than 25 years, the Maelor Voluntary Service has provided support for patients, visitors and staff at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The team of volunteers operate the five cafes situated across the site. All the profits raised are donated back the Wrexham Maelor Hospital, enabling them to purchase new medical equipment.

Jenny Griffiths, Chairwoman of MVS said: “The Maelor Voluntary Service is proud to give something back to the staff who are truly inspirational. Please can staff come to the café at the main Maelor Hospital entrance on Monday to receive your free refreshments.”

Events are taking place across the UK to mark NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day, with some raising money for valuable NHS charities and causes. There are also a number of national commemorations planned, for example, at 11am, people will be asked to observe a 2-minute silence and at 8pm, people are being encouraged to clap our frontline heroes once again.
