Wrexham’s Christmas celebrations are to get underway this week with festive events taking place throughout the town centre.

Covid restrictions in winter 2020 saw the cancellation of many Christmas celebrations as social distancing requirements, rising cases and the sudden December lockdown put a stop to the usual festivities.

However with the town’s Christmas tree now up and the lights switched on, Wrexham Council, along with Ty Pawb and Eagles Meadow are set to hold events – many of which are free to attend – throughout December.

Thursday December 9 will see the returned of the popular Victorian Market, which will see the grounds of St Giles and many town centre streets turned into a hive of festive stalls and entertainment.

Taking place between midday and 8pm there will be all sorts of hot, freshly prepared food to try including Wrexham.com’s fave German sausages, festive mince pies, mulled wine and hot chestnuts.

Organisers say more than 100 stalls will available to browse – with thousands of people expected to visit the first Christmas market since 2019.

This weekend (December 4 and 5) will see Father Christmas arrive in Wrexham to mark the opening of Santa’s Grotto on Eagles Meadow.

The grotto will also be open on December 11, 12 and the 18 – 23 December between 11am and 5pm. It’s free to visit the grotto, but donations can be made towards North East Wales Mind Charity.

Eagles Meadow will also play host to festive street entertainers for shoppers to enjoy every weekend throughout December.

Ty Pawb is also kicking off its Christmas celebrations this week with a group of singing penguins set to entertain visitors everyday between December 1 and Christmas Eve.

Other events include Festive Food Court Fridays with live entertainment (December 3 and 10 between 5:30pm and 8:30pm), Festive Face Painting (December 4 between 11am and 2pm), Penguin Crafts (December 11 between 1pm and 4pm) and a screening of the popular film, Happy Feet (December 18 at 11am).

All the above events are free to attend.

Ty Pawb will also play host to a Christmas Comedy Night on December 10 at 7:30pm (£10 to attend) and Winter Print Making on December 18 (2pm-4pm) and December 23 (10-midday).

Both the Winter Print Making sessions are £3 to attend.

December 17 will see a Christmas Party and local favourites Rhythm Train provide an evening of entertainment at Ty Pawb.

Taking place between 7:30pm and midnight the event costs £12 to attend.

There will also be the opportunity on December 10 to pick up some unique gifts when Ty Pawb hosts the free to attend Wrexham Makers Market (10am-4pm).
