Rhiannon Dixon getting ready for the Great North Run.

A local teacher has raised £1,144 for Nightingale Hospice after running a marathon in her mother’s memory.

Rhiannon Dixon, teacher in Ysgol Heuflan in Gwersyllt, took part in the Great North Run last month up in Newcastle.

In 2010, Rhiannon’s mother Jaquie was diagnosed with cancer and sadly passed away last March at Nightingale House Hospice and, as a way to say thank you, Rhiannon chose to raise money for the hospice.

She finished the half marathon in two and a half hours and although it was the longest run she had ever completed, and Rhiannon said she was proud of her time.

She started her training more than a year ago and it also motivated her to give up smoking and has resulted in her losing four and a half stone.

Rhiannon said: “The care the nurses took of mum was exceptional; they were all so patient and wonderful with every member of my family.”

Eleri Smith, Income Generation Administrator said: “This is a lovely commendable story of personal achievement, as well as a fantastic way to help raise funds with a sponsored challenge for the hospice.”

If you want to set yourself a challenge call 01978 414292 or visit the Nightingale House website www.nightingalehouse.co.uk
