Susan Elan Jones has vowed to ‘continue to fight for the things that matter locally’ if re-elected as MP for Clwyd South.

The Welsh Labour MP, who has represented Clwyd South since 2010, will stand for re-election in the upcoming snap general election.

In a statement, Susan Elan Jones said: “I am very honoured to stand for re-election in the Clwyd South constituency. This is my home. I was born and brought up here and I’ve served as MP since 2010.

“I have helped thousands of local people each year on a range of issues. I worked for charities for 15 years before becoming an MP and I’ve chaired the All Party Parliamentary Charities Group. I am committed to working with local charities, social enterprises like Plas Madoc Leisure Centre, and heritage and community groups, like the Brymbo Heritage Group. I am a Vice President of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

“The snap general election is a pretty dreadful U-turn by Prime Minister Theresa May. It leaves the people of Clwyd South with a stark choice. Only two candidates can win in this seat. It’s a straight two-horse race between Welsh Labour and the Tories here. A vote for Plaid Cymru, the Lib Dems or any other party will simply help the Tories.

“The Tories don’t understand our area. At the last General Election they chose someone from Chelsea as their candidate; this time they’ve picked from an ex-merchant banker who doesn’t live here either. But even worse than that, the Tories have refused to bring in new laws which would have stopped bank closures in Cefn Mawr, Chirk, Corwen, Llangollen, Rhos and Ruabon. They now refuse to back the sort of Brexit that would put jobs and working people first.”

She added: “If re-elected as your MP I’ll continue to fight for the things that matter locally – things like improved disabled access at Ruabon Station and a new health centre for Cefn Mawr. For more affordable homes and improved transport links.

“I’ll continue to promote our local tourism economy to bring in new jobs and I’ll fight to make that sure that post-Brexit farming support helps local family farms and not just rich landowners.

“I am committed to providing strong local representation, speaking up in Parliament for regular people from around here, not just the privileged few.
