Plans to build new affordable homes in Johnstown approved as local councillor welcomes the development
Plans to build six new affordable homes in Johnstown have been given the go ahead.
The development, at 83 And 85, Heol Offa, includes building a two storey property containing six one bedroom “social rented” apartments.
Three apartments would be located on the first floor and the remaining three on the second floor.
Applicants Lawray Architects say the development for the “vacant land” would also include “re-landscaping works which includes the formation of nine new parking bays, a dedicated bin storage and a communal garden for the use of all residents at the rear of the site.”
In a design and access statement submitted alongside the plans earlier this year, the applicants said: “The proposed development relates to the erection of a scheme incorporating a total of 6 no. one-bedroom social rented apartments towards the west side of the site.
“The properties will provide long term homes for the residents of Wrexham and will be used either for single occupancy or couples, in line with WCBC’s allocations policy.”
Speaking at Monday’s planning meeting, Johnstown councillor David A Bithell welcomed the development
He said: “There’s been some derelict land at 83 And 85 Heol Offa for about eight or nine years.
“I’ve been pursuing either social housing or affordable housing. There is massive demand for affordable housing in Johnstown, likewise across the county borough, especially for one bedroom accomodation.
“I absolutely support this. It’s six apartments, two storey, council built and I think it’s to be welcomed.”
Cllr Dana Davies added: “It’s great to see an affordable application come before the committee.
“But also this is a new way of building as it’s supposed to reduce fuel poverty and it uses different technologies to make the homes as efficient as possible to reduce costs and expenditure for the tenants.
“I’d welcome seeing more applications like this come before the committee.”
The plans were backed unanimously by planning committee members.
