A petition opposing a housing development on green barrier space in Wrexham has been launched by one local resident.

The petition, which was started by Sharon Thomas, follows on from the news that outline plans to develop almost 60 homes on Boozey Field, Gwersyllt, were approved by Wrexham’s Planning Committee.

Details within the petition state: “I care about affordable housing in Wrexham, however, I believe approving housing developments on green barrier and green belt land will set a precedent and have a negative impact on local communities, e.g. Gwersyllt, Rhosrobin, Pandy, Bradley, Summerhill, Cefn-y-Bedd, and Llay.

“I feel roads are already busy with traffic, schools over-subscribed and local health services stretched to their current limits and over. I believe adding extra housing into this area will be a tipping point and make life more difficult for current residents.

“I feel disappointed WCBC have already approved outline plans for development, without proper consultation with local residents on developing more brown field sites, and identifying alternative housing solutions likely to be more sustainable for future generations.”

This is not the first time concern has been raised over proposed developments on green spaces in Wrexham, with campaigns previously launched opposing large scale plans in Llay, Rhosrobin and Pandy.

The future of several green barrier spaces in Wrexham are currently uncertain, with a recent consultation on the ‘Preferred Strategy for Wrexham’s Local Development Plan’ outlining details of potential housing locations across the County Borough.

It is estimated that over the next 12 years over 12,000 new homes will need to be developed across the county borough, with 1200 set to be on brownfield sites and the remainder on green spaces.

The results of the LDP Consultation have yet to be released.
