In exactly a week voters such as yourself across the county borough will go to the polls to have their say on the new line-up of Wrexham Council.

From 7am on Thursday 4th May voters across Wrexham will decide which councillors which represent them and their local area for the next five years.

In Wrexham 52 councillors will be elected to represent 47 wards. Candidates may represent a political party or they may be independent but all successful candidates will be elected by their local community.

There are 155 candidates standing across Wrexham, with 12 current councillors not seeking reelection – meaning the seats are up for grabs for new councillors!

With just a week to go the message from Wrexham’s Returning Officer is to ‘use your vote on May 4th’.

Dr Helen Paterson, Returning Officer, said: “You will soon have the opportunity to vote for who you think is the best candidate to represent your community on the council for the next 5 years.

“Who you vote for is entirely between you and the ballot paper but – if you are eligible to take part in these elections – I would encourage you use your vote so your council is truly representative of the wishes of your community. In Wrexham, as in other parts of the UK, turnout is low and I would like to see this pattern change this year so on May 4 please take the time to vote.

“The Council delivers important services such as education, bin collections and social care so it is important you have your say on who your council representative is by using your right to vote.”

The last council election in 2012 saw on average just 34.5% of those on the electorate going out and voting. The electorate does not even equate to the number of people who live in Wrexham – just those who are registered to vote.

Figures across the 47 wards varied, however the average turnout for Wrexham was so low it means around 65% of those registered did not vote.

Unsure who your local candidates are? Wrexham.com have sent letters to all 155 candidates standing in Wrexham and invited them to fill in a bio about themselves and the chance to take part in an online question and answer session.
