New lighting schemes using solar and wind powered lanterns installed in Wrexham
Two new lighting schemes using solar and wind powered lanterns have been installed in Wrexham.
In a first of its kind for the county borough, the first project is along a cycle and footway in Penycae which had no lighting due to problems accessing the power supply in the area.
It was funded through the Welsh Assembly’s Local Sustainable Transport Covid Response Grant and “has meant a lot for local users”.
Cllr John Phillips, local member said. “The lighting has been very well received by residents and is a big boost to cyclists and residents alike. The area now looks very user friendly and we can dim the lighting remotely during the darkest periods of the night.
“I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in ensuring this project went ahead for the residents of Penycae.”
The lighting on the old Penycae railway line has been finalised, the scheme a 1st in the Wrexham Borough combining solar & wind energy 2 power the lights will make a huge difference. The scheme was funded by a WG grant & I would like to express my sincere thanks to all concerned. pic.twitter.com/HGtdG9hIOl

The second project, funded by Esclusham Community Council, has seen improvements made to lighting in an area where difficulties in finding a power supply prevented the usual footway lighting being installed.
Cllr Mark Pritchard who represents Esclusham, highlighted that Esclusham Community Council 100% funded their scheme, “I would like to say a big thank you to the community council for funding the scheme, and giving massive improvements to the community. We are now on a journey to improve lighting across Esclusham with the solar and wind powered lanterns.
Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, added: “Whilst not major projects these are important steps into the sustainable use of new technology in order to make improvements for residents.
“I hope we can build on these two projects and to see the technology used to benefit the environment which will help reduce our carbon footprint even more.”
