A public event providing information and updates on the £4.5m redevelopment of the People’s Market will take place next month – with a shortlist of names for the new arts and market hub due to be announced the same day.

The information event on Monday July 3rd, which is open to members of the public and tradespeople, will give attendees an opportunity to find out more about the work being done at the Oriel Wrecsam People’s Market on Chester Street.

The Council say the open event will enable everyone in the area to come along and view the plans, chat to the team, meet the contractors and find out what will be happening over the coming months and once the centre is opened.

They added that Contractors Wynne Construction, who are carrying out the revamping of the People’s Market, are looking to connect with local businesses and self-employed traders who are interested in working on the ongoing refurbishment work.

A shortlist of names for the hub will also be announced at the event and attendees will have the chance to be the first to see the proposals and to vote for their favourite.

You the public will then be consulted on which name they prefer via social media, unspecified websites, events and ‘the press’, with the winning name to be announced in September.

Redevelopment works converting the People’s Market into a multi-million pound facility incorporating shops, market stalls, a food court and theatre and exhibition space began in January 2017.

Work so far has included the stripping of the main market hall, the redecoration of the South Mall and car park stairwells and the installation of new parking machines in the car park itself.

The roof of the building has had glass panels installed which will add more light to the inside of the building. A new entrance is also planned for the building which will further increase the natural light into the building.

A pair of bright murals outlining the vision of Wrexham’s multi-million pound arts and culture facility, have also been painted in the entrances of the People’s Market.

It is anticipated that new facility is due to open in the spring of 2018. A grand opening of ‘“Dydd Llun Pawb” or Everybody’s Monday is currently being planned for 2nd April 2018.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Councillor for Communities, Partnerships Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “I encourage anyone who might have an interest in the OW Peoples Market project to attend this event – particularly self-employed tradespeople in the Wrexham area, who may be able to add their skills and expertise to this project as work progresses.

“We are especially keen to see local businesses benefit from this investment, so it’s vital that as many trades businesses as possible attend.

“Members of the public are also welcome to come along to this event, as they will have the opportunity to see what’s been happening on-site through the information provided by representatives.”

The project is supported by funding from the Arts Council for Wales, the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places and Wrexham County Borough Council.

The information event will take place at the Guildhall on Monday July 3rd between 3:30pm and 7pm.

Ongoing updates about the development can also be viewed on a notice board in the Cafe in The Corner, which is located in the South Mall of the market.
