Wrexham MP Ian Lucas has marked his first week since becoming Shadow Minister for the Middle East and Africa with an event in Wrexham welcoming African guests to the area.

Mr Lucas, who took the Shadow Minister post over from new Education Secretary Stephen Twigg in the recent reshuffle, greeted visitors from Lesotho on Thursday night during their visit to the Wrexham area.

Schools across Wrexham have been taking part in cultural exchanges with Lesotho for some time now, and Mr Lucas has himself visited the country.

He said: “The visit is part of an ongoing relationship between schools in Wrexham and schools in Africa. It is one of the many links which Wrexham has with communities globally – we have social links, academic links, and our companies export to countries right across the world.

“That’s one of the reasons why I am excited at taking up this new post. There have been seismic changes in Africa and the Middle East this year, and my new role will be fascinating – both at a Parliamentary level and with its impacts here in Wrexham.”

A Welsh Barn Dance is being held at Overton Village Hall this Sunday from 6.30pm to raise funds for future visits, tickets cost £5.
