Llay Car Trader Guilty of Selling Clocked Car
Saleem Quirishi now known as Samir Quirishi who traded under various business names at a car lot on Miners Road, Llay pleaded guilty to two offences under consumer protection law. The offences arose as a result of advertising and selling a Citroen Saxo with 52,000 miles on the clock when in fact the vehicle had travelled in excess of 120,000 miles.
Mr Quirishi was fined and ordered to pay costs totaling over £1500. When announcing their decision the magistrates said that in their view Mr Quirishi had deliberately set out to mis-represent the mileage. Trading Standards at Wrexham Council investigated this case after the new owner of the Saxo was alerted to the incorrect mileage by a neighbour, who had coincidentally been a previous owner of the vehicle.
Andy Lewis from Head of Housing and Public Protection said: “Since manufacturers have moved to digital odometers it is actually easier than ever to tamper with the recorded mileage of used cars. For many people the purchase of a car is a big decision and it may be the second largest amount of money spent on a single item after the family home. It is important that motorists take steps to protect themselves and carry out thorough checks before committing to buy.”
