Learn heritage skills at the Clwydian Range and Dee valley this summer!

A new project is helping people of all ages learn the value of old countryside management ways.

The Clwydian Range and Dee valley National Landscapes are working together with the Little Learning Company to give an insight into yesteryear ways of managing the land.

Supported by funding from the UK Government, the Little Learning Company is a heritage skills project delivering a range of related training activities to engage new audiences in Denbighshire from 11 years old upwards to the opportunities available within the heritage skills sector.

This includes sessions focussing on heritage construction, heritage engineering (within the railway sector) and traditional crafts. The project’s aims are to:

• To raise the awareness of heritage skills, especially those on the ‘endangered’ list.
• Promote the sector as a career choice, train people with skills to become community tutors.
• Encourage volunteering and optimise opportunities with partners; and
• Support heritage venues to complement a community-based offer of provision.

Countryside Rangers in South Denbighshire have been working with the Little Learning Company project to deliver free heritage and rural skills training sessions. These sessions include drystone walling and scything.

Councillor Alan James, Denbighshire Cabinet Lead Member for Local Development and Planning, said: “These sessions are a fantastic opportunity to learn yesteryear land management skills and techniques for all ages and a great way to spend time in our countryside this summer.

“We are grateful for the support of the Little Learning Company for helping get these sessions available for people to enjoy learning heritage skills based in the country.”

Scything at Dôl Llangar – Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th August
Drystone walling at Coed Pen y Pigyn– Tuesday 20th August
