‘Intense Competition’ Sees Wrexham Card Store Close
A long standing card shop in Wrexham has closed after ‘intense’ competition resulted in the store being ‘unprofitable’.
Card Outlet which is located on Queen Street has been a long term occupier in Wrexham Town Centre, however was closed yesterday with the company due to go into liquidation.
The company operates nine stores across the UK – four of which have been closed due to being ‘unprofitable’.
The store closed unexpectedly with many shoppers unaware that the shop was no longer open. When Wrexham.com popped down yesterday afternoon and this morning there were several people outside the shop, looking inside and reading a notice in the store window (pictured below)
Anecdotally one Wrexham.com reader has been in touch to say they saw three members of staff outside trying to get into the building.
We contacted PSB (Parkin S Booth) insolvency practitioners yesterday who said the company ‘is entering into liquidation on 16 July 2015 and the case is being handled by our Liverpool office’.
Ian Brown, the anticipated Liquidator of Card Outlet Ltd said: “The company operated from nine shops. Four located at Wrexham, Wigan, Mold and Southport were unprofitable due to intense competition on the High St from other card retailers such as Card Factory.
“As such, due to losses incurred, the company became insolvent and needed to go into liquidation. The decision to close all the shops was taken last Friday.
“The remaining five stores which are believed to be profitable remain open whilst a decision is taken about their future.”
