Wrexham’s new prison – HMP Berwyn – has won a prestigious property award.

The £250m prison won the Community Benefit category at last night’s RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Wales Awards.

Held at the CAVC City Centre Campus in Cardiff, the awards celebrate some of the most inspirational developments in land and construction across the region.

The Category C prison had been shortlisted for three categories, however it was the redevelopment of former Firestone site on the Wrexham Industrial Estate and the ‘significant benefits bought to the local community’ which won the prison the Community Benefit award.

Details from RICS about the Community Benefit award state that it: “Recognises excellent achievement in providing a facility, which directly benefits the local community. In particular, the project must illustrate its success through local community feedback. Projects may be single or groups of buildings in urban, rural or coastal areas. They may be new or improvements to existing facilities.”

Located on the former Firestone site on the Wrexham Industrial Estate, the Category C prison welcomed its first inmates in February 2017. The prison will eventually house 2,100 men.
