People in the ward of Gresford East & West will get a chance to elect a new councillor shortly.

The election has been called after Cllr Andrew Atkinson disclosed he was in Panama on a working holiday, and then announced he was staying there and thus resigned his councillor duties as of 31st August.

Back in 2017 Mr Atkinson won the ward in the regularly scheduled election with 917 votes, with three other people also standing. Out of the 2,288 people then eligible to vote just 1,265 did.

If there is a contested election a poll will be held on Thursday 28th October, the first poll recently which will hopefully not be under pandemic election conditions – with leafletting and usual door to door activity now allowed.

Nomination papers of anyone wishing to stand must be delivered to the Returning Officer, The Guildhall, Wrexham, LL11 1AY, before 4pm on Friday 1st October 2021.

For those looking to register to vote you must be registered by October 12th.

You can make sure you are registered to vote via gov.uk/register-to-vote, and you can also apply for a postal vote via this form / process – and Wrexham Council have previously accepted scanned copies. Previously we have seen third parties suggesting using their forms to register to vote, or register for postal votes, but check carefully what you are opting into via that process.

All applications, amendments or cancellations for new and existing postal votes must reach the Electoral Registration Office at The Guildhall by 5PM on 13th October.
