The Green Flag Community Award is a national scheme that recognises high quality green spaces in the UK, that have a high level of voluntary and community involvement. The Award is part of the Green Flag Award scheme, the national standard for quality parks and green spaces.

The criteria for the award is similar to the full Green Flag award with areas such as, safety, maintenance, marketing and management all judged. Acton was entered for the award due the large amount of work done by volunteers and community based groups that work in partnership with the Parks, Countryside and Rights of Way section of Wrexham County Borough Council.

The Friends of Acton Park which were set up 4 years ago help with the maintenance in the park, fundraise for new facilities and provide guided nature walks to local school children.

Acton Park Community Angling Club was formed to help manage the fishing on the lake and now has over 100 members and has carried out a variety of improvement works around the lake.

The Cunliffe Arms Bowling Club is one of the most successful in the local area and offers coaching to children.

Acton Community Council has worked in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council to support improvements in the park, including the funding of the seasonal ranger post across the summer months and a bid to improve the play area,

The award recognises the contribution of all the various groups and partnerships.

Councillor Bob Dutton, Lead Member, for Environment and Transport, Wrexham County Borough Council said “This is a first class example of community commitment and the work of the volunteers is very much appreciated. In times of financial pressures on local services it is great to see the willingness of local people to maintain and enhance the local environment”
