Glyndwr University Passes Rigorous Examination

Glyndwr University has received a glowing report by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).

The QAA’s Institutional Review – designed to safeguard quality and standards in UK universities and colleges so that students have the best possible learning experience – praised its quality of learning opportunities for meeting UK expectations, highlighting areas of good practice and making just four recommendations for enhancement.

In the report Glyndwr’s Disability Assessment Centre, was judged to provide “a high level of support” for students with disabilities and other features of good practice included accessibility of information and “strong and extensive expertise” in the delivery of e-learning.

The report added that a free laptop scheme and the expansion of the University’s Wi-Fi provision had ensured “the widest student access to learning technologies available”.

With feedback from staff and students, assessors also found the University – which has campuses in Wrexham, Northop, St Asaph and London – has a “comprehensive and sophisticated range of centrally generated management information” to support strategic planning and decision making.

Vice Chancellor Professor Michael Scott was delighted with the results and proud of how far Glyndwr University has come in a short period of time.

He said: “The first five-year inspection of Glyndwr University since it was awarded its title and status as a University was rightly rigorous.

“We are delighted at the positive outcome which highlights areas of good practice and provides welcome advice and encouragement for the next stage of growth.

“The report justifies the faith that’s been placed in Glyndwr University by all of its stakeholders. Our students and staff can feel proud of the achievement of the first five years and our industrial and commercial partners, who have placed so much confidence in the university, will also be assured by this report.

“Future students can see that in coming to Glyndwr they will be joining a modern, dynamic University that is devoted to giving them degree programmes designed with potential employers to get them jobs at the end of their studies.”

The report also highlighted the “good quality of the relationship between students and the University” with the Students’ Guild confirming the overall student experience had “transformed” between 2008 and 2013, because of the “substantial developments” which had taken place.

The QAA review also announced investments, structures and leadership role put in place were “appropriate and producing measurable gains”.

Glyndwr University will now push forward and apply for research degree-awarding powers.

Prof Scott said the QAA report will act as a confidence boost and proves the University is on the right track to meet the aspirations of its region and country.

He added: “It is a good constructive report which should please and encourage the communities we serve; Glyndwr University has come a very long way in a very short time and is delivering on a local, national and international stage. This highlights our good work and shows we are moving in the right direction.”
