Demolition of Former Wrexham Music & Theatre Space Begins
Demolition of a ‘historic building’ formerly used to host music and theatre performances in Wrexham, has begun.
The Wrexham Musical Theatre Society Building, on Salop Road has remained vacant since Spring 2014 when the building was closed.
The building itself dates back to the 1800s, however over the years the site has undergone a series of refurbishments. Up until its closure the building continued to house performances from the Wrexham Musical Theatre Society, along with the venue also being used for lecture space.
In the 1970s the site was acquired by the Wrexham Musical Theatre Society – a non-profit making Charity whose first task was the purchasing, building and equipping of a new Headquarters at Salop Road.
After received a substantial Lottery Grant the group were able to repair and improve the premises in Salop Road. This work enabled the society to double up the rehearsal room as a Studio Theatre, subsequently named “The Riverside Studio Theatre”, signifying the proximity to Wrexham’s river The Gwenfro.
The demolition of the building is expected to take place between now and mid-April.
When Wrexham.com visited the site this morning much of the roof had been removed and scaffolding / netting was in place down the side of the building. A digger was also at the site.
Details within the application documents state: “The building is in a very poor state of disrepair and following extensive asbestos removal from the building it is now open to the elements and would become dangerous in a very short length of time.”
It is proposed that the site will later be redeveloped for residential purposes.
