The Leader of Wrexham Council, Cllr Ron Davies has praised the people of Wrexham after the town achieved it’s highest ever recycling rates.

In the first quarter of 2011-12 almost three quarters (74.75%) of waste received at household waste amenity sites in the county borough was either reused, recycled or composted.

This meant that the council achieved an overall reuse, recycling and composting rate of 52.29% for the whole of Wrexham, the highest quarter on record.

Cllr Davies said: “I would like to thank the people of Wrexham for this, this is their achievement not ours.”

Over 2010/11 Wrexham achieved a recycling and composting rate of 47.29% which was the 6th best result in Wales.

Cllr David Bithell said that recycling rates in the town had gone up 10% over the last three years from 37.38% to 47.29%.

He said: “We’ve also reduced the amount of waste which is sent to landfill by 10% which is significant when you consider that in 2013/14 it will cost £72 for every ton of waste sent, in contrast to £40 in 2009/10.

“The more we recycle, the less is sent to landfill which saves money for the council and more importantly for the tax payer.”
