Christmas got underway in Wrexham city centre this evening with live entertainment, a brass band and traditional carols by the tree.

It was the first time that Christmas light switch had taken place in the city since before the coronavirus pandemic.

This year saw Wrexham Council and Eagles Meadow team up to provide a mixture of tradition and modern to create festivities for all of the family to enjoy.

Hundreds gathered throughout the evening to take part in the Christmas event, which began with carols by the Christmas tree on Queens Square.

Led by Victorian singers – with help from street entertainers, Father Christmas and a brass band – the crowds took part in some festive classics such as Away in a Manager and Hark the Herald Angel Sing.

From there the band led the crowds through the streets of the city, with the lights switching on as families made their way to Eagles Meadow.

There they were greeted with live entertainment kicking off with PROBLEMATIC, then KHALYSIS, and music from Abz Love, Redd, Passmore & Belle.

Father Christmas joined Abz on the final count down and plunger action:

This evening’s light switch on marked the start of Christmas in the city centre, with a Santa’s Grotto, Victorian Christmas Market amongst the festive events coming up between now and the big day.
