Cheaper broadband and phone packages as part of Cost of Living support

“Claim what is yours” is the message from the chair of Wrexham Council’s cross party Cost of Living Group.

Social tariffs are cheaper broadband and phone packages for people claiming Universal Credit, Pension Credit and some other benefits. Some providers call them ‘essential’ or ‘basic’ broadband.

They’re delivered in the same way as normal packages, just at a lower price. Amid rising living costs, Ofcom is encouraging companies to offer social tariffs to help customers on low incomes.

It’s available to those on a variety of benefits – if you or someone in your household claims Universal Credit, you could switch to any of the tariffs available.

The details have been highlighted by Wrexham Council ask part of their cost of living crisis response, Cllr David A Bithell, Chair of the cross party Cost of Living Group, said, “With today’s cost of living crisis it’s important that people claim everything they’re entitled to.

“Cheaper broadband could mean more money for essentials for those already struggling so please check it out and claim what’s yours.”

Current prices range from £10 to £20 and most tariffs offer superfast broadband so you can stream HD films, keep in touch with friends and family or shop online.

Each provider has its own list of eligible benefits, but all include Universal Credit. Other benefits may include Pension Credit, Job Seekers’ Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Personal Independence Payment, Attendance Allowance, and Care Leavers’ Support.

Other support might be available to customers who cannot get online. If you’re struggling to pay your mobile phone or broadband bill, speak to your provider as soon as possible to see how they can help.
