Lindsey Magee has been in touch to tell us about her mother’s six year old cat Louie who has been poisoned in Coedpoeth, with concerns that deliberate poisonings could restart.

Lindsey told us “Louie had been off his food for a couple of days and went missing for 13 hours on Sunday. My mum found him on Monday behind a bathroom cabinet. She noticed he had blood in his mouth so took him straight to vets.”

“They ran blood tests and said it was the worst case of poisoning they had seen and were surprised he had survived as long as he had. He was put to sleep.”

Eight cats were poisoned in Coedpoeth in May 2012, with two dying from renal failure. At the time the RSPCA said they believed it was ‘systematic poisoning with anti-freeze’.

Lindsey said “We just want people to be vigilant and make sure this doesn’t happen again”.

The poisoning has been reported to the police.

Anyone else affected can contact 101 (Police non emergency line) or the RSPCA – who can be contacted on their cruelty line 0300 1234 999 .

Anti freeze is very sweet tasting to cats, and is well documented as a method of deliberate poisoning. It causes, as in Louie’s case, a slow and painful death over a few days.

Anti freeze does as its name, it lowers the freezing point of water based substances. The usual use being in cars, be it for coolant or in window screen wash. Obviously the latter is quite common in winter, and although Coedpoeth is higher and cooler than our weather station it certainly has not been close to freezing over the last few days and weeks.

Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 the maximum penalty for anyone found guilty of this offence is up to 6 months imprisonment and/or a fine of £20,000.

If you are aware of similar incidents we would encourage calling the police on 101 and the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999 .

Update: After publishing this we were tweeted another suspected poisoning:
