A total of 490 fines were issued last month to people dropping their cigarette butts on the floor – however there has been an overall decrease in dog fouling across the County Borough .

The fines come as a result of a crackdown on littering and dog fouling across the County Borough, with enforcement officers from Kingdom Security brought in earlier this year by Wrexham Council to tackle the issue.

Under the crackdown, those found littering, dropping cigarette butts or not picking up after their pets risk a £75 fine.

Throughout June there were a total of 553 incidents, with 490 penalties issued for people failing to dispose of cigarettes; 32 for those failing to deposit of other littler and 11 for dog owners who failed to pick up after their pets.

This is an increase on the 405 fixed penalty notices issued across the County Borough in May.

The reduction in dog fouling, which has been a well documented problem across the County Borough has been welcomed by Ashley Houston-Birch, Team Leader at Kingdom Security.

He said: “We are seeing a lot more people picking up after their dogs have fouled, and being responsible.

“After following up customer service requests, we have found some areas which have a high level of dog fouling, and we are paying regular visits to those areas.

“We are also speaking to people in those areas to try to find the best times to patrol.”

Ashley added: “We continue to hand out Bin It to Win It cards to those who dispose of their litter, and that has received good feedback – people are happy that we are giving something back.”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “I’m very pleased to hear that more dog owners are taking on board the consequences of failing to pick up after their pets – dog waste and litter are an unsightly blight on many communities, but the recent change in attitude shows that enforcement is taking effect and that is encouraging.

“I’m also glad that Bin It to Win It continues to recognise the good behaviour of the vast majority of residents who are conscientious enough to dispose of litter and dog waste properly.”
