Almost 600 fixed penalty notices for littering were issued across Wrexham County Borough throughout April – totalling over £44,000.

Across the 30 day period a total of 591 fixed penalty notices were issued by enforcement officers – with the Grosvenor Ward, which covers parts of the town centre racking up 242 fines.

The fines come as part of a county wide crackdown on dog fouling and littering, with environment protection officers, Kingdom brought in by Wrexham Council to help tackle the issues.

Those found littering or not picking up their dog’s mess face a £75 fixed penalty notice.

During April a total of £44,235 were issued in fines. This is in contrast to a previous year when we were told just 21 tickets over the entire 12 months were issued totalling £1,575, before and perhaps prompting the new company being brought in.

Earlier this week Wrexham Council also stated that a total of 41 Fixed Penalty Notices for dog fouling had been issued since the zero-tolerance approach was launched on April 1st.

Cllr David A Bithell. Lead Member for Environment and Transport. Said: “We are continuing our zero tolerance approach to tackle littering and dog fouling across the county.

“We have been working with Kingdom since April 1st and members of the public have been very responsive to the course of action to make our streets and communities cleaner.

“Wrexham council spends £1.2million pounds a year to keep our streets clean and tidy, and tackling this problem is one of the administration’s priorities.”

Cllr Bithell added: “If you don’t drop litter and if you pick up after your dog, you have nothing to fear.”

The new targeted approach to tackling dog fouling and dropping litter in Wrexham has developed a mixed response in the past few weeks, with more than 100 Fixed Penalty Notices issued within the first day of the ‘zero tolerance approach’.

More recently a war of words broke out between Town Centre Forum Chairman Nigel Lewis and Lead Member for Environment and Transport Cllr David Bithell clashed over the topic during this month’s Town Centre Forum Meeting.

A full list of the number of fines issued in each ward during April can be found below. May’s stats for dog fouling and littering are expected early next month.
