You make reference to Bury Market as a market to replicate. I can see why you have used them as an example but as their market offer includes 350 stalls under one roof I’d be interested to learn your thoughts on how we could achieve such an offer here in Wrexham?

Apologies Alun not Alan. Time to call it a day.

    Evening Alan

I am all for a mixed offer to attract increased footfall in our town-centre and a greater number of independent shops is equally necessary as national chains. There is no reason why they can’t trade happily next to one another.

Vibrant markets are part of that mix but in the end it is up to traders to offer a retail experience that folk want and value. Over the years shoppers have expected more than is the current offer….if that wasn’t the case then we wouldn’t be having this exchange.

The impact of Covid on town-centres is not lost on anyone and as a Council we have offered free parking after 11am to tempt Wrexham shoppers to use their town-centre and moving forward we want to make Wrexham more of a social meèting place alongside a retail one.

Pre Covid I was hopeful town-centre traders would go for BiD status, thereby giving themselves a structured forum to influence how the centre is promoted. Hopefully this will be looked at again.

City status in itself is a worthless prize but if it can be used to promote inward investment into the Borough then surely that is no bad thing.

Newport were awarded City status back in 2002 after two previous bids; Reading the following article I’m sure we can use the process to our advantage:

    https://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/15154044.newport-has-been-a-city-for-15-years/

I appreciate others hold countering opinions and wish to promote Wrexham as a market town….I look forward to learning about how they propose to make this happen.

I’d be interested to learn your thoughts on what are the barriers to independent traders wanting to setup business in Wrexham and what type of shops we are missing in Wrexham. I would like a mens outfitters who sell brown trouser braces.

Katy thanks for sharing your thoughts on what you believe is good for Wrexham.

The CoC bid can proceed on its own but my view is the City bid will enhance our chances to secure former. I hope you will accept WCBCs ruling coalition are ambitious and want to see things improve for all. Inward investment is what will kick-start our Counties fortunes and the City bid is only one way in which to achieve this greater goal.

Please bear in mind we are talking of a bid, the selected town is at the discretion of the Queen.

Aas regards our Holywood stars, they have invested in our town’s club because they see the great potential based on a heritage wh8ch is second to none – oldest Welsh club, the original ground from 1864, the oldest International football stadium in the world. Rob and Ryan’s ambition for the Club is clear to see…..as Wrexham political leaders I hope we can match their’s.

Sorry for the delay in replying, just back from a holiday break.

The form of democracy that happens in the UK is through the ballot box every five years not by way of a straw poll or survey which secured less than 500 responses.

If my constituents feel my arguments for a city bid are weak then they will vote for someone else in next May’s local election….that is the true power voters hold.

Fortunately as an Independent Councillor I stand on my personal credibility and passion to see the best is delivered for Wrexham and for Brynyffynnon.

The vote called for at the Full Council on Tuesday can only be advisory as WCBC’s constitution stipulates the decision to continue with a city status bid has to be made by the Executive Board, as it is economic in nature.

I would not argue against any of the points you have raised. Unfortunately I am tied to the protocol of expecting Lead Members to address these issues in their willingness to progress the Arts Hub option. That doesn’t mean to say I haven’t raised concerns with Lead Members since early 2014.

I share your concerns that the markets have been left to fend for themselves for far too long and with hindsight it might of better to of ploughed on with installing refrigeration in the People’s Market, back in April 2014, thereby allowing a food retail experience which ought to of driven up footfall for that market.

I’m sure searching questions will be asked, if following the consultants feed-back to WCBC’s EBI scrutiny committee and then the Executive Board, if everything goes belly up. I am still hopeful of a plan of action going forward which accommodates the needs of all involved. We are a matter of weeks away from a public announcement on the Arts Hub so my advice is let’s wait and see what that is and take it from there

I have and whilst many of the questions would seem irrelevant to a member of the public the opportunity to give a text reply of up to 2000 letters did prove useful for me. We’ll have to wait and see if any of the comments made do impact on the consultants discussion making before they finalise their recommendations.

We’re on the very same wave-length and as you say a co-herant plan to develop this area will be great news for the town-centre. I’ve started a dialogue with the Catholic Church so whilst it’s early days I’m quite excited if my ideas comes to fruition.

Dylan apartments are news to me. The site was put forward as a possible location for the Arts Hub but nothing came of that.

Early days but the area is ripe for redevelopment. We just need to ensure the end use for this part of the town works for Wrexham and isn’t just motivated by short – term profit.

As the County Councillor for the area I will be trying my damnest to enure the best possible outcome is delivered.
