In response to Wrexview – planning decision are supposed to be based on planning merits only . Therefore there should be a free vote and NO whipping.
That said , and I appreciate your cynicism, I can recall occasions when that clearly was forgotten, as was being “ Independent!”

Looks like our Tory/Indy councillors are learning from their masters at Westminster.
Love him or loathe him Steve Bray has been doggedly exercising his free speech at Westminster with a “ stop Brexit “ protest.
Not with the new Policing bill our MPs supported as his equipment has been seized by the Police.
At the start of the Ukraine invasion I asked my MP whether she , like me , praised Russian dissidents, prepared to speak out. Her reply was positive and supportive of free speech!
    Hollow words I am afraid!

And for our next trick – Fracking site back near Holt/ Marford anyone ? Community Councillor Atherton supported climate action just over 2 years ago – S Atherton MP now dismisses our (grand)children’s future along with wokeness !

I hope all the councillors get solidly behind the motion asking that they do all they can to support the people of Ukraine.

I notice that within the motion is praise for the brave people of Russia who have expressed their dissent to what their leaders are doing. Again any caring person would echo that sentiment.

However I wrote over a week ago to my MP to voice agreement on the non partisan approach by our political parties to the situation. I did ask whether she agreed with me that the right to protest to show dissent from what your government is doing is a fundamental right we should all cherish. So far silence on the matter. What conclusions can I draw?

The operative word here is “ heard “ ( what you say ) and does not mention or imply action . As a retired nurse I know if your hear what your sick patient says but take no action on what you have heard the situation is unlikely to change ,and will probably get worse.
Unless we are convinced that the sick person is going to heal themselves. However all our PM seems to have operated on is his spleen , by repeated smears by right wing trolls . Incidentally it seems that splenetic outburst is one aspect of the sick person’s staff leaving.

Apparently she and her party ( pardon the pun ) have to wait for a second in line civil servant to tell them that a boozy do in the centre of government , on the eve of the funeral of the monarch’s consort is not in good taste.
Or maybe afraid of Wrexham being penalised by her mates if she expresses an opinion.

Don’t rate the present council but I am fairly confident if it had been discovered a similar do was on the same day in the Guildhall, when flags were at half mast – MP would have resigned !

Looking at the 10 benefits from City status they are more like “ 10 benefits you would get from a proactive council!” And I could not see anything about how it will help anti poverty, as asked for at “ the village hall meeting!”

If I read it right the Queen has the final decision on the recommendation of her advisors. If any of them look at today’s shenanigans then to quote Private Frazer – “ we are doomed I tell yee -doomed!”

    Hi Phil

Thank you for starting, what I believe is a serious attempt to discuss City Status. If I am correct in my memory I have voted twice on similar action and remain sceptical. I have two questions- the first directed my vote some 20 years ago and the second ( sadly ) has been relevant these last 10 years

    1) Puffed up civic pride , and having one over on Mold , is all fair and well but how does a City status bid improve the direct economy status of the council and the town/city? Based on those who have succeeded in previous rounds I think the case is at the best unproven.

    2) Will City status help the area achieve something that has eluded it since 2011?
It is all very well being a city but when you lack a Local Development Plan and can’t direct strands of development to where best suited I question its effectiveness.
Enjoy the debate and my prime bet on “ city status bingo “ is “ I blame Cardiff/South Wales !
