Whilst I am personally not in favour of the prison, it worth noting that the Isle of Wight has two enormous prisons which have been there for many years. They are not pretty to look at close to, but they do not distract to the general beauty of the Island and millions of tourists visit there each year. Its not all gloom and doom.

An island is a perfect place for building a monster sized super prison, any escaped convicts would need to swim and would very probably get caught before making it to shore. Surprised no one has thought of this before ;)

Not all the residents of the Island are happy. Interesting to read that HMP Albany was upgraded from a category C prison to a category B soon after opening.

Council Leader Neil Rogers quoted 1000 jobs to be created, how long before we hear it wont be worth £20-25m annually to the local economy either?

“The latest figures we have is that there are 3.7% of people unemployed in Wrexham, slightly above the Welsh average. And over 1,000 young people aged 16-24.

“We recognise we have to go through the process of planning. This project is worth £250m for construction. It will fetch annually to the local economy between £20-25m.

“It will create up to 1,000 jobs and we need to work now with our partners in the public services, for example the probation service in north Wales, North Wales Police, both the university and sixth-form college.

That’s all the council are interested now, the prison, the prison, the prison. All they are interested in is their own ego and all other necessary services and facilities are going to suffer.

Reports of a riot tonight in HMP Maidstone, a much smaller prison , about 600 , than the one proposed in Wrexham. Something else Wrexham Council need to discuss with the Ministry of Justice , so that all contingencies are prepared for.

Interesting to note that Maidstone is also a category C prison. The MoJ says the Wrexham prison will house the same category of prisoners.

Surprised by that, as Sky News saying that it houses many sex offenders !
