Comment 8orParticipantWith fuel prices rising to eye-watering levels, and a need for improved air quality through reduced vehicle emissions, surely there has never been a better time to take stock and reduce unnecessary journeys by car. You will pay almost £1.60 for a litre of E5 fuel in some garages (for those old enough to remember paying by the gallon, that’s a staggering £7.27 a gallon). And with Russia flexing its muscles on the edge of Ukraine, fuel costs are only likely to continue to rise. Some cars now cost £100 to fill.
The Council is doing its bit to encourage people to reduce car dependency with its ongoing key projects and declaration of a climate and ecological emergency, and through the introduction of ‘active travel’ routes.
I’ll tell them a good place to start. You’d think parents of young children would be at the top of the list when it comes to having concerns over air pollution and road safety around schools. But not some, it seems. Many simply can’t be bothered on either count, especially when collecting their child. Take a walk past any junior or infants school near you (even some Secondary) at school end time, and you will see cars parked all over the place. In road junctions, on yellow zigzag lines directly outside schools, on pavements, in contravention of yellow line parking restrictions and directly in front of private driveways. Some can’t even be bothered to leave the car to collect their child. Ask any teacher what response they get if they speak to an errant parent sat inside their car collecting their child, with the engine running if it’s cold, looking down at their phone, and you’ll see how much they care. These schools are deliberately located in close proximity to their student catchment areas. Some parents may be dropping them off on their way to work, although many work from home these days. But with a little bit of time management, most parents could leave the car at home and walk to collect their children. The exercise can only be good for the children, and probably won’t do the parents any harm either. You’d also think that with inflation rising as it is, energy costs in particular, and with tax rises imminent, that they would look for ways to save money, like everyone else. But they are either inept at arranging their affairs and in denial, or consider themselves as being sheltered from such financial constraints and that air pollution and school road safety is for someone else.

katyParticipantUsed to see a car that would sit in their driveway waiting for the school bus to go past. Would then drive the less than 100m to the bus stop and pull up in front of the bus so their precious child didn’t have to walk too far or heavens forbid stand and wait for the bus.
Some people are just lazy and you will never change them.

WreX-iTParticipantSchool runs are done by lazy people who could park a few streets away and walk to meet their sprogs to stop making the areas outside of schools dangerous. Other people live quite literally down the road and still drive.
IDIOTS!!! And schools are expanding to take in more pupils.
If i am working in an area with a school, i have to avoid certain times or get blocked in by selfish people. I hate these idiots.
