Did anyone else roll their eyes at the mention of city status? Seems the only ones interested are a select few councillors. Public said no in that last half hearted consultation they held, then apparently not enough people took part and they went ahead with it anyway. We all remember how that ended.

The debate from all contributors is a fair one, and one which we should have openly, and its a pity the Council are not facilitating this.

Looking at the map, there are 34 community council areas in Wrexham. If they were doubled up, put 1 & 2 together, 3 & 4 together, to 33 & 34 together … would this work? It would need 17 councillors, or if similar in Flintshire, 34 in total. What is the work load of councillors currently? How would those 34 people best represent the views of the community, and govern a county?

It’s not as straightforward as just joining Community Councils as the representation is based on population which is why some area have more than one Councilor. It really does not matter how large or small an area is it is about how the person elected t REPRESENT an area engages the electorate and feeds back. There is little evidence of this actually happening and those that do hold surgeries have quite small numbers attending. A number of Wrexham Councilors don’t even attend their own local Community Council meetings either. How many ever produce a newsletter or have a web site to share or gather information?

Cllr Rogers referred to there being no sweeteners available to local authorities for amalgamation.Yet the Welsh Government say incentives will be given to those Local Authorities who merge voluntarily.Who can we believe?

Clr Rogers also stated that a merged Council would have it’s HQ in Mold — how could that have been decided if Wrexham won’t even talk to Flintshire — besides Flintshire currently are moving many staff from Shire Hall due to concrete problems and large parts of the complex are to be demolished. They have also been operating ‘agile working for over 12 months allowing staff to work from home to reduce the amount of office accommodation required.
He also stated that a response to the document from WG by the end of November was insufficient time to consult with the electorate yet the period being offered is actually more than WCBC are giving for the current consultation on the budget.
Is this not being selective for the benefit of scaremongering and misleading people..

I wonder whether the pressure from Labour in Cardiff for merger has resulted in the ten Labour Councillors resigning their party membership here in Wrexham. This is one issue where they have found common ground with the Independents and they are united against the proposal. How long they will remain united on other matters remains to be seen.
