moggsieParticipantdear wxm.com :
Just to clear up something. I am NO expert here. I hope you are more so. 20,000 not registered to vote in Wrexham. Wrexham Population (from article) 71,194. Registration figures (also from article) 50,999.
Is the Wrexham Population figure based on those eligible to vote ?
Why should it ?
If it doesn’t, a first glance might paint a less democratically “engaged” view of our population that it actually should.
It doesn’t do a great service to us if it does though does it ?

R TKeymasterIt crossed my mind when I read that – but it is the data given by Wrexham Council as a comparison based from June 2013. The 2011 census data came out in lump form in 2012 and more detail in 2013 so hopefully it is a number provided for a reason rather than a load of babies and children being included!
Looking at the census data, and this is for the county borough not the wrexham constituency specifically the split is:
Age 0-15: 25,818
Age 16 to 64: 86,175
Age 65+: 22,851
All people total: 134,844There is also this document https://www.wrexham.gov.uk/MinutesData/ExBoard/Reports/hccs6012.doc that refers to a similar figure so would imagine it is despite not formally stated – however in such things firmness rather than guesswork is best!

moggsieParticipantRob..don’t you ever sleep :)
Well, if you can trust Wikipedia, the 2010 Electorate was 53,733. Assuming a 5% increase in the population ( conservative), that shows I’m talking rubbish in being so optimistic. 35% of the Wrexham Constituency cannot be bothered to even spoil their ballot paper to register their distrust of the political class.

R TKeymasterWrexham Council have beaten us to the query on this by emailing requesting a change! For completeness as some read the forums as well as the articles it is below:

This morning (Wednesday 22nd) Wrexham Council have clarified the data released alongside the voting registration stats to say “The population figures quoted in yesterday’s email for both Parliamentary seats include children who are under 18 and cannot vote as well as people who are not commonwealth citizens but are residents in the areas of both seats.”Wrexham Council have requested: “There is a fear that the more people read this article the more will attempt to re-register and cause severe disruption with our electoral services.
“Could you please remove or amend the article to reflect that the population figures also included under 18’s and non-commonwealth citizens as both categories will be unable to vote in the upcoming election.”
[/quote]Back to Moggsie’s point, it appears the number was irrelevant and no idea why it was given out!

I’m sorry but this is still confusing and inaccurate. Citizens of the Irish Republic are entitled to vote in United Kingdom elections, and they are not members of the Commonwealth. It is understandable that Wrexham CBC wish to clarify matters, but they should do so properly.

99DylanJonesParticipantThe Chief Executive is paid an additional amount to be the Returning Officer for Wrexham – surely it is not beyond the realms of anyone with the census data and responsible for registrations to give the two figures that are being sought — numbers who are eligible and numbers who are able to vote – the different being those who are so disillusioned that they feel they have no influence- they may not spoil a ballot paper but they spoil the whole electoral process by not engaging.
