Wrexham residents are being urged to register to vote before the deadline date later this month.

On 3rd May local elections take place in Wales and residents across Wrexham County Borough will be asked to vote for the candidate they want to see represent them on Wrexham Council.

Last night we revealed the list of candidates for Wrexham seats as the countdown to elections begins.

Wrexham.com will be offering full 24/7 news coverage on this year’s local elections.

In order to vote in the election residents must be have registered to vote on the Voters’ Register by the 18th April.

The majority of eligible voters will have already have done so during the annual canvass of properties undertaken last year, but there are those who may have moved home, moved into the area or recently turned 18.

Generally, to be included in the Voters’ Register a person must be: resident in the county borough on the date of the application, a British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of another member state of the European Union or British Overseas territories, aged 18 or over.

To register to vote for the first time a signed Electoral Registration Form must be sent to the Electoral Services Department.

The form can be downloaded from Wrexham Council’s website at www.wrexham.gov.uk/english/council/electoral/voteregister.htm or email [email protected] to request a form.

If you do not have access to the internet you can telephone the council’s helpline on 01978 292020 to request a form.

The 18th April is also the final day for registering to vote by post, voting by post is becoming more popular and makes life easier for those who are at work or away on election day.

A postal vote application form is all that’s required to be filled in and can be obtained via the above methods.

Dr Helen Paterson, Returning Officer for Wrexham, said: “Registering and casting your vote is the only way people can have a say on who represents them on Wrexham Council for the next four years.

“In Wrexham we would like to see as many voters as possible able to cast their vote and the first step to doing this is to make sure you are registered. Please take time to do this and return your form before the cut off date of April 18.”
