We here at Wrexham.com sent written letters to all 130 odd candidates in the local Wrexham Council elections this year, and here are the replies! Where there is no reply below from a candidate, we did not receive one before the week of the 23rd April. If you are a candidate or voter reading this join in the debate or let us know what you think in our Wrexham Forums!

Rossett (1 seat)
Burnham – Welsh Liberal Democrats
Jones – Welsh Conservatives

Jones – Welsh Conservatives

1 – Which party do you align yourself with, and why? (Or if non aligned, why not?)

On the Council I am a member of the Conservative Group. Since being elected party politics have never been an issue. My priority has and always will be Rossett and its people first.

2 – What will be your first personal priority or aim if you were elected?

I will continue to be a strong voice for the people of Rossett at Wrexham CBC. Some of the promises that I have made include working to achieve 20 mph speed limits outside the 2 village schools. Improve the heating and insulation in Council owned homes. Seek to provide affordable homes for people to be able to remain in the village. Protect the environment and increase the number of Tree Preservation Orders. Obtain a 40 mph speed limit on the B5102. Inprove the facilities in the Village Hall to benefit the whole community, including our young people. I will work to ensure we maintain viable shops, post office and business in our community.

3 – Why do you personally want to be a councillor when so often you just get blamed for problems beyond your control?

I have always been a doer, I like to be able to get things done to improve the quality of life for our community. I believe I can be an effective advocate for the people of Rossett.

4 – Many politicians and local councillors are accused of bring out of touch with voters. What will you do to ensure you stay ‘in touch’?

I live in the ward. I write a report every month for our village magazine that is delivered to every house. I am a Governor of the two schools, I am a Community Councillor and attend Village Hall meetings.

5 – How do you plan to tackle or prevent anti-social behaviour in your local area?

Thankfully the level of Anti Social Behaviour in Rossett is low. We need to keep that so by ensuring effective policing, a pleasant environment and good youth and sports facilities.

6 – Do you think any local authority has the means to improve economic and job opportunities? And if you do, what do you think the priority actions should be?

The Council needs to support business both small and large. I spoke out against car parking charges which would damage the small business community. We need to support starter business, particularly in rural communities. We need to maintain the infrastructure on the Industrial Estate to ensure that it is attractive to business. We need to have a ‘can do’ approach to attracting business to Wrexham.

7 – What do you think has been the best decision taken by the council in the last four years?

Significantly reducing expenditure whilst maintaining and improving services

8 – What do you think has been the worst decision taken by the council in the last four years?

I’m still thinking about this one.

9 – What is your favourite place to visit or favourite thing to do in the local area?

We are blessed by many beautiful places in the County Borough, but a round of golf at Wrexham Golf Club takes some beating. Sadly I have only managed 2 this year.

10 – If you had to pick your best memory connected to Wrexham, what would it be?

The opening and closing nights of the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru.
