Young Footballers Commended by Wrexham FC Boss For Sporting Excellence

Schoolgirls from across Wrexham showed their sporting spirit in a tournament at Colliers Park – with Wrexham Football Club manager Dean Keates on hand to give out certificates at the end.

Organised by Wrexham Council’s Sports Development Active Young People team, and run with the support of the Wrexham FC Racecourse Community Foundation (RCF), the tournament followed a 10-week block of sessions organised at secondary schools by RCF coaches as part of the schools’ extra-curricular programme.

More than 80 girls took part from seven secondary schools:

Ysgol Clywedog
Ysgol Morgan Llwyd
Ysgol y Grango
Darland School
Ysgol Rhiwabon
St Christopher’s School
St Joseph’s School

The eventual winners were Grango A, beating St Joseph’s in a close final, with Darland A beating Darland B in the third and fourth place game.

Pupils from the winning Grango team were invited to Wrexham’s home game against North Ferriby Utd., and had the chance to play on the Racecourse pitch at half time, alongside the RCF/Wrexham AFC girls’ team.

Dean Keates said: “I was very impressed to see the enthusiasm shown by players, and their level of skill on the pitch – they should all be commended for their efforts.”

Cllr Ron Prince, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, added: “I’m very glad to see there was a high standard of good sporting spirit at this tournament, and congratulate each of the girls involved.

“I would also like to thank staff in the Active Young People team and the Racecourse Community Foundation.”
