The condition of Wrexham’s roads are amongst the worst in Wales, new figures have revealed.

The statistics, released by the Welsh Government also show that Wrexham’s roads are the worst in north Wales – with 12.8% of A, B and C roads across the county borough requiring further investigation.

Wrexham’s roads are also the third worst in Wales, with 13.9% of Ceredigion’s and 19% of Powys’ road networks requiring further investigation.

Our neighbouring county Flintshire was found to have the best roads in Wales, with just 4% of A, B and C roads found to be in need of further attention

Each year roads across Wales are surveyed to discover the state of repair in terms of structural condition. The majority of the roads network in Wales is in good condition according to the report with 11% in need of close monitoring.

Despite the assessment for 2015-16, Wrexham’s road network has improved over the past three years, with Welsh Government data showing 16.7% of roads required further investigation in 2013-14 along with 13.8% in 2014-15.

The figures have been defended by Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, who said: “It is important when considering the condition of infrastructure assets that you consider and compare like with like.

“Analysis of the information published by the Welsh Government clearly identifies that over the last three years, Wrexham has made significant progress in reducing the percentage of roads requiring further investigation

“A closer analysis of Wrexham’s carriageway condition survey results highlight that for our A and B road network, generally those roads of significant importance to ensuring the economic prosperity and success of the area, the results highlight excellent performance.

“Wrexham will continue, despite reducing availability of funding, to apply best asset management principles in repairing infrastructure, investing its limited resource in those areas of the road network that will help drive and stimulate the future economic of Wrexham providing a safe and resilient road network for the travelling public.”
