Preparations for Wrexham’s upcoming festive celebrations got underway this morning with the arrival of the town’s Christmas tree.

Sponsored by Allington Hughes and Tilhill Forestry, the tree made the journey from Llandegla Forest to its new home on Queens Square ahead of the Christmas lights switch on in two days time.

Organised by the Wrexham Glyndwr Rotary Club this year’s Christmas lights are being turned on by ITV2’s Ibiza Weekender Jordan Davies, who will be flicking the switch as part of the Stiwt theatre and LHK production of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Over the years there has been criticism over the lacklustre feel of the Christmas lights with some branded as ‘barbed wire’ (below), something which was remedied slightly back in 2016 with investment into replacements for Queens Square, Rhosddu Road and Lambpit Street.

This year has seen an upgrade across the town, with a ‘carpet of lights’ added to Hope Street, Priory Street and further down Regent Street.

Although not under council control, it was mentioned that Eagles Meadow has also seen a ‘refurb’ of their lights, so Wrexham should see an all round brighter Christmas this year.

Below Destination Manager Joe Bickerton and Events Manager Amanda Davies give you a quick run down of events, as well as some footage of the heavy lifting involved to get the tree in place:
