History Alive! – Wrexham’s annual living history festival returns to the fields above Bersham Ironworks this Sunday.

The festival, with a full complement of historical re-enactors and the rally paddock lined with classic motorcars, motorcycles and stationary engines, takes place on Sunday with the displays open to the public between 11am and 4pm

This year the event marks the 950th anniversary of probably the most memorable date in British history, 1066.

Councillor Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities and Partnerships, said: “This year’s show promises to be the best yet with three re-enactment groups taking part in History Alive! During the day in a series of displays, the re-enactors will tell the story of how England came to be conquered by the Normans in 1066 and what happened afterwards here in Wales.”

North Wales is home to one of the country’s top medieval re-enactment groups, Cwmwd Iâl, and they will be joined on the field of battle by the Viking Society and Les Miles des Marches.

“The bottom field (the rally paddock) is devoted to the veteran, vintage and classic vehicles of yesteryear. We have had a good number of entries so there will be plenty to see. History Alive! starts at 11 a.m. and culminates with the ‘Battle of Hastings’ around 3 p.m. Let’s hope for good weather and let battle commence!”

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham Council and ward member for Esclusham, said: “This is a really fantastic event that’s gone from strength to strength year on year, and I’ve always been keen to support it and see it supported by others.

“I would urge anyone, whether they are interested in history or not, to attend – it’s an excellent opportunity to see historical re-enactors and vintage vehicles up front.”
