Wrexham Symphony Orchestra Raises Vital Funds For Alzheimer’s Society
The Wrexham Symphony Orchestra have raised £1,849 for Alzheimer’s Society at a concert held at the William Aston Hall last month.
The orchestra were the first amateur group to attempt performances utilising all 9 Mahlar Symphonies. The Orchestra took to the challenge with enthusiasm and commitment with the help of concert conductor Kenneth Woods, also famed for lecturing at the Proms.
French horn player and long-time orchestra member Matthew Ellis said: “Dementia awareness is a great cause to champion and we are happy to help. Years ago, I and Andrew McCaddon, a violinist for the orchestra and a Wrexham-based GP, spoke and he said that one day we would attempt all 9 Mahlar Symphonies. I didn’t take this seriously at the time as it felt like a pipe-dream but here we are and we have achieved what we thought was impossible.”
Jacky Baldini, Alzheimer’s Society Locality Manager, said: “We are extremely grateful to Wrexham Symphony Orchestra and all the time and energy they have put into raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society. As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals and groups, like the Orchestra, to help us support people to live well with dementia today and fund research to find a cure for tomorrow.”
The next 9 Mahlar Symphony concerts held by the Wrexham Symphony orchestra will be held on 6 July 2013 at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester and 8 March 2014 at the William Aston Hall, Wrexham. For more information please visit www.wrexhamsymphonyorchestra.co.uk
