A former Wrexham student has picked up one of the most prestigious awards in the entertainment industry.

Downton Abbey director Brian Percival won best director at the Emmys, the US TV industry awards.

Brian studied at the North Wales School of Art and Design, now part of Glyndŵr University, in the early 1980s.

He was originally from Liverpool and lived in Penyffordd during his time at the college where he studied audio-visual studies.

Downton Abbey, which returned to UK screens on Sunday, picked up a number of accolades at the awards including best mini series.

Dr Stuart Cunningham, Glyndŵr University’s academic leader for creative industries, media, performance and humanities said: “We are delighted to hear about Brian’s award, which is extremely well deserved.

“His achievements are testament both to his own talent and dedication and to the work that goes on at Glyndŵr University to prepare students for success on the global stage.

“The skills creative industries students acquire with us have led to graduates working for the likes of Disney and Electronic Arts on major films and games projects, and success stories like Brian’s show the results of our focus on producing creative professionals equipped to excel internationally.”
